For the most of the past year, Jencey Keeton, formerly one half of the indie-pop duo Smile Smile, has been preparing something new and very different. Toiling away in their basement recording studio, she and her husband, Cole Keeton, have put together an album of electronic pop music that one might compare to Phantogram or the Purity Ring—ethereal compositions that are moving and that make you want to dance.

“Honestly, I used to think that you had to be unhappy to create good music,” Keeton says. “But now that I’ve been married for a couple of years and don’t really have any huge qualms with life anymore, I’ve started to write music from a happier place and invite listeners to celebrate with me more than commiserate.”

Accompanied by guitarist/bassist Emsy Robinson Jr. and Dillon Bartel, aka DJ Mouth Mold, and featuring an extensive lightscape provided by Duck Lights, they call the project French 75. “We’ve gone to painstaking efforts to create an experience that is more like performance art with our custom lights,” Keeton states.

On Saturday, June 7th, they will be releasing their debut EP, Echoes, at WRECKED presented by Art Conspiracy. – Christopher Hughes
